Jayashree Story

I am a 61-year-old single woman. I live alone. In June 2019, I underwent a double knee replacement surgery. The AAIWO Saheli- Singles group provided all the love, support and help I needed. A Saheli came and stayed with me when I was discharged from the Hospital. The Nurse-Aide did not show up. A Saheli helped me to take a shower for a few weeks. Another Saheli flew in from another state and stayed with me for ten days giving me round-the-clock care. Another Saheli was always there to drive me to my Physical Therapy and Doctor’s appointments. Several Sahelis brought me freshly cooked home-made food and groceries. I am eternally grateful for everything AAIWO has done for me. I encourage all divorced/widowed single women to join the Saheli group. You are never alone when you are part of AAIWO.

Aparna Story

My name is Aparna. I am a single mom and I have a teenage son. I went through one of the most difficult times of my life while I lived in Akron, OH. My marriage of 13 years broke down and I became a single mom. To add to my challenges, my ex-husband moved to a different state and I became a solo parent. AAIWO has provided tremendous help when I was struggling in my life. The Psychologist from the Helpline Chair was a calm listener and offered me free counseling and support. I reach out to her even to this day when I feel lost or have to deal with parenting challenges. Other Board Members have given me legal, financial and life advice. I have adopted one of the Board Members as my God Mother. What a blessing to have a mother in the US away from home. I recently relocated to Seattle and still call her often from Seattle to talk about life and challenges.

I also joined AAIWO Board following my divorce and recovery. The experience I gained while serving on the Board, gave me so much inspiration to do something more with my life. I got admission to the MBA program at a reputed University in Michigan and also took up a challenging job at Amazon in Seattle. For all the women who are in a similar situation as mine, I just want to say "Remember to have fun. Float in your own world by being happy with yourself. Indulge in self-care, hobbies and then take care of family and the world”! Personally, I did Tae Kwon Do, Piano, 5k running and totally fell in love with myself. You can do it too! I got tremendous help from AAIWO not to mention lifelong friendships and mentorship. Finally, I am grateful for all of the blessings and help that I received from AAIWO! Please keep up the good work.
